What Sizes Can a Custom Mattress Be?

A custom mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company can be up to 144 inches wide and 4 to 14.5 inches thick. The largest family bed is 143.5 x 83.5 inches. Narrow sizes are built too. RV mattresses can be as narrow as about 25 inches wide at full adult length. Small pieces for an RV dinette that folds into a bed are fine too.* Each one is made to size from the measurements you send, in inches, including odd and special sizes. For an imported or European bed sized in centimeters, divide each number by 2.54 to get inches.

Common sizes and shapes you can order include:

Semi-truck sleepers

32 x 80, 36 x 80, 39 x 80, 42 x 80 and 44 x 80 inches. See semi-truck mattresses.

RVs

short queen at 60 x 74 or 60 x 75 inches, and RV king at 72 x 80 inches. See custom RV mattresses.

Boats

V-berths, split V-berths and other berth shapes, built to fit your cabin. See custom boat mattresses.

*What the factory won’t build: mattresses intended for use by children under the age of four, including crib and cradle sizes. Orders also can’t ship to Alaska, California, Hawaii, Ohio or Utah.

How Do You Take Measurements for a Custom Mattress?

Your custom mattress is made to measure from the numbers you send, so a small measuring mistake shows up in the fit. Take every measurement in inches, and take it in more than one spot.

Measuring a mattress
  1. Length: Measure the inside length on both sides of the bed. This matters most on antique beds and custom frames, which often differ from modern sizes.
  2. Width: Measure the width at the head, the middle and the foot. Take 3 or 4 readings to catch any spot where the frame narrows.
  3. Height: Measure from the floor to the bottom slat. This number helps you pick how thick your mattress should be. An antique frame can sit 15 inches off the floor, while most modern frames sit about 7 inches up.
  4. Low profile: If the bed sits high, ask about a low-profile box spring and a thinner mattress. Both make the bed easier to climb into.
  5. Odd shapes: For a shape that is hard to measure, ask for the pattern-maker kit when you request your quote.

How Should Your Custom Mattress Feel?

Your custom mattress should suit your body, the way you sleep and the firmness you like. You set that feel when you choose the build: innerspring, hybrid, latex or foam. That makes it a personalized mattress, built to your size, your shape and your comfort.

Innerspring has steel coils and a springy feel. Foam hugs your body and eases pressure points. Latex feels bouncy and holds its shape. A hybrid puts coils under layers of foam or latex. Side sleepers often want a softer top to ease the shoulder and hip. Your weight matters too, because weight limits shape the build and the price.

A customizable mattress can also use natural materials. Natural cotton, wool and natural latex are all options.

What Shapes Can a Custom Mattress Be?

Custom mattress shapes from The Beloit Mattress Company include triangles, rounds, V-berths, L-shapes, and rectangles with cut, rounded or notched corners. Notched corners fit around bedposts. V-berths fit the pointed bow cabin of a boat.

Thousands of saved patterns sit on file at the factory. They come from custom orders for customers coast to coast in America, in the Caribbean and in New Zealand.

Custom Mattresses for Antique Beds, Boats, Trucks and Other Odd Spaces

Antique beds, boats, truck sleepers and other odd spaces each need a mattress built to their own size and shape. For an RV, start with custom RV mattresses.

Antique Mattress

An antique bed mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company is built to the inside size of your old frame. Antique beds often don’t match today’s standard sizes, so a stock mattress can leave gaps or hang over the rails. The factory builds for wood, rope, metal, Jenny Lind, plantation and spindle spool beds, in homes and in bed and breakfasts. Rounded corners and notches that fit around the bedposts are both options.

Boat Mattress

Custom boat mattresses from the Beloit factory are built to the shape of your berth, including V-berths and split V-berths. They are made to hold up in damp, high-moisture cabins. As a guide, 5 inches thick suits sleepers up to 200 pounds, and 8 inches is recommended up to 250 pounds or more. Thicker boat mattresses are built too. Each boat mattress is non-flip, with a quilted damask top on the sleeping side. A skid-resistant base helps it stay put. Learn more about custom boat mattresses.

Truck Mattress

A semi-truck mattress built to order fits the exact size of your sleeper berth. It fills the bunk without gaps. Common sleeper sizes such as 36 x 80 and 42 x 80 inches are built at the Beloit factory. For any other cab, the mattress is built to the exact size you need. That goes for Mack, Freightliner, Peterbilt, International, Kenworth, Volvo and other trucks. Pocketed springs help keep your spine aligned on the road. You choose the build and firmness, from innerspring to foam. A truck mattress can also meet FMVSS-302, the federal fire safety rule for vehicle interiors. Read more about the semi-truck mattress.

Custom Family Bed

An oversized family bed gives your whole family room to stretch out and sleep together. Custom family beds are built wider than a standard king. They come in three sizes. The smallest is 107.5 x 79.5 inches, about two full XLs side by side. The middle size is 119.5 x 79.5 inches, about two queens. The largest is 143.5 x 83.5 inches, about two California kings. You can also get matching frames and foundations. See oversized family beds.

Futon Mattress

Futon mattresses from the Beloit factory replace a flat, worn futon pad with one built to your frame’s size. Each one is wrapped in natural cotton, with a high-density foam core or 240 to 560 encased coils. Every futon mattress comes with a 10-year warranty. Before you order, check how thick a mattress your futon frame can fold with.

Rollaway Mattress

Standard rollaway beds from The Beloit Mattress Company are twin size and support up to 400 pounds. Rollaway beds fold away when you don’t need them. That makes them handy for hotels, motels and homes with overnight guests. If your rollaway frame isn’t a standard twin, the mattress can be built to its measured size.

Camper Mattress

A custom mattress topper for camping replaces an air mattress when you sleep outdoors. It has no air to lose, so it won’t go flat overnight. It holds up through temperature swings, rolls up for storage and travel, and lies flat on any surface. Toppers can be made thinner than 4 inches. Ask for one on your quote request, or read more about custom mattress toppers.

Sofa Sleeper Mattress

A sofa sleeper mattress built to order replaces the thin, worn pad that lets guests feel the metal frame underneath. The new mattress is built to the size of your pull-out bed, and you choose how it feels. Before you order, measure the pull-out frame. Then check how thick a mattress the sofa can hold when it folds shut.

Murphy Bed mattress

Murphy bed mattresses from the Beloit factory are built to fit your wall bed and fold up with it. Coil-spring Murphy bed mattresses are built up to 10 inches thick. Check how much room your Murphy bed cabinet allows before you choose a thickness. Learn more about Murphy bed mattresses.

Custom Size Sheets to Match

Custom size sheets are made to fit your mattress’s exact shape and angles. Ask for the pattern-maker kit, with its large piece of tracing cloth, when you request a quote.

Custom Mattress Sheets

How To Measure For Sheets

  1. Lay your mattress pieces upside down on the cloth from the kit.
  2. Trace around each piece to capture its shape and angles.
  3. Turn the pieces back over and check that they sit inside the traced lines.

Mail the traced cloth back, and you’ll get a quote for your custom sheets.

How Much Does a Custom Mattress Cost?

The main things that change the price of a custom mattress are size, thickness, hinges, cut or rounded corners, weight limits and your choice of cover. The Beloit Mattress Company prices each build by quote.

Size

A wider or longer mattress uses more material.

Thickness

A thicker mattress uses more material.

Hinges

Hinges let a mattress fold, and they add to the build.

Cut or rounded corners

Each cut or rounded corner adds work.

Weight limits

A mattress made for more weight needs a sturdier build.

Cover choice

A special cover changes the price too.

A real example: a recent order was a queen-width mattress cut to 74.5 inches long, with a hinge. The two hinged sections were different thicknesses, 6 inches and 8 inches. Built on the Majestic foam model, it came to $780 before tax.

You buy straight from the factory, with no middleman. The quote is free, and a bedmaker sends your price within 24 to 48 hours of getting your details. If a standard size already fits your frame, you may not need a custom mattress at all.

A custom mattress is built to the size and shape of one bed. It is not a stock size like queen or king. At The Beloit Mattress Company, the mattress is made to order from your measurements. You choose the build and the firmness. People order them for antique beds, boats, RVs, Murphy beds and frames that standard sizes don’t fit. For the longer version, read what a custom mattress is.

Custom mattresses are better than standard ones when your bed is not a standard size. A mattress built to your frame fills it, with no gaps and no overhang. Comfort is a separate choice: it comes from the build and firmness you pick, not from the custom size. There are trade-offs too. A custom mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company is built after you approve your quote, and it usually can’t be returned. If a standard size fits your bed well, a standard mattress is a fine choice.

Your custom mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company ships about a week after you approve your quote. Before that, a bedmaker reviews your details and sends your price within 24 to 48 hours of getting them. Every mattress is built in the Beloit factory. Within about 300 miles it is delivered and set up in your home. Farther away, it ships to you. Travel time after shipping depends on how far you live from the factory in Beloit, Wisconsin. Complete measurements on your quote request help you avoid a follow-up call.

Every custom mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company has a warranty of 1 to 10 years and a 365-night guarantee. The warranty length depends on the build you choose. Your exact warranty comes in writing with your quote, so you know the terms before you order. Under the 365-night guarantee, the factory makes adjustments for up to a year.

Returns are usually not possible on a custom mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company. A bespoke mattress like this is built to fit one bed. Instead, you get a year of adjustments. If the mattress isn’t right, the factory adjusts it for up to 365 nights. Sleep on it for 30 days first, because a new mattress needs time to break in.

The price of a custom size mattress depends on the build, not only the size. Thickness, hinges, corner cuts, weight limit and cover all change it. Every one is made to order for a single bed. Quotes from The Beloit Mattress Company are free. You see the real price for your bed before you decide.

Yes, you can order a custom size mattress from The Beloit Mattress Company without visiting the factory. Start the free quote form with your contact details. The next step asks for your bed’s size, its shape and the feel you want. From there, a bedmaker reviews it and sends you a price. If anything is missing, the bedmaker calls or emails you. After you approve the price, your mattress is built and shipped to you. Shipping reaches most of the United States. There is no add-to-cart price, because every custom mattress is priced by quote.

Yes, The Beloit Mattress Company still builds innerspring mattresses at its factory in Beloit, Wisconsin, in custom sizes too. An innerspring mattress is built around a unit of steel coils, with padding on top. The company made some of the first American-made innerspring mattresses during the Great Depression. A hybrid is another choice, with coils under foam or latex. Natural cotton and wool layers are options too.

Custom mattresses from The Beloit Mattress Company ship across the United States, except to Alaska, California, Hawaii, Ohio and Utah.
