Help your kids get the quality sleep they need

Getting a good night’s sleep is extremely important for all people, but especially for children. Kids who don’t sleep well struggle in school and in some cases may face social issues. Plus, sleep is essential for growing bodies. If your child is having sleep problems, use these tips to help them get the rest they require:

Give Them Their Own Bedtime: Figure out if your child is more of a night owl or a morning person and then adjust their bedtime accordingly.

Stick to Wake Up Times: It can be tempting to let your child stay up late and sleep in on the weekends or holidays, but they will get more consistent, quality sleep if they get out of bed at the same time each day.

Create a Routine: Children tend to thrive in routines, so create a routine or ritual that you do every night before bed to help signal to your kid that it is time for sleep.Sleep Problems for Children

Turn Off the TV: It can be a challenge to pull kids away from the TV, but they get better sleep if the TV or any other type of screen gets turned off, at least, two hours before bed.  Tweet This

Take the Stress Out of Bedtime: Too much stress or excitement before bed can make it hard to fall asleep. As much as possible, keep lights dim, sounds low, and activities relaxed around bedtime.

Set the Temperature: Most people sleep better in a slightly cool environment and kids are no different. Make sure they are not bundled up too tight and set the thermostat at around 70 degrees.

Address Their Fears: Children have lots of fears attached to bedtime, and as irrational as they may be they can make sleep a real challenge. Don’t be afraid to address these fears directly, and if necessary get a stuffed animal to “stand guard.”

Watch Our for Sleep Disorders: If your child has consistent trouble sleeping, they may have a sleep disorder and need to see a medical professional.
