Serta vs. Beloit mattress

Which Is the Best Mattress Company?

How do they stack up against each other?

If you’re thinking about buying a new mattress from Beloit Mattress Company in Beloit, WI, you may want to know how Beloit mattresses stack up against the big-name brands. Here, we’ll take a look at Serta vs. Beloit Mattress Company. Which is the best mattress?

First, A Little History of Both

Headquartered in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, Serta was founded in 1931 when a group of independent mattress manufacturers joined together to form a national mattress brand. Today, Serta is a privately held company owned by six licensees, with National Bedding Company, LLC, being its largest shareholder.  Serta mattresses are distributed internationally in more than 150 countries.

Beloit Mattress Company was founded in 1929 in Beloit, Wisconsin, by the Clark family. The small mattress factory was a simple, family-run operation where skilled workers constructed innerspring mattresses by hand. In 1954, Beloit Mattress Company was purchased by local Beloit, WI, businessman Donald Poppie. The Poppie family still owns and operates the Beloit Mattress Company factory and showroom today, where they still make high-quality mattresses by hand.

How the Mattresses Are Made

Serta operates 60 mattress factories worldwide, with 23 in the U.S. and 4 in Canada. Most Serta mattresses are machine quilted, which means that a quilting machine is used to stitch layers of polyfoam and fiber together, creating the top surface of the mattress.

At Beloit Mattress Company, the mattresses are made by hand in Beloit, WI, in the same building where you buy them. And many of them are made using the same time-tested techniques that were used in the 1930s, such as hand tufting.

  • For instance, a tuft is a stitch that goes through the entire mattress, keeping the filling in place and ensuring good support throughout the mattress.
  • Hand tufting simply means that a skilled worker creates these stitches by hand.
  • Hand tufting is considered the longest lasting, most durable way to construct a mattress.

However, although the mattresses are still constructed in the same way they were when the company was founded in 1929, Beloit Mattress Company also employs the latest bedding innovation.

For example, Beloit Mattress’s Heirloom mattress line is hand tufted, but these mattresses also feature the latest Leggett and Platt Comfort Core technology. In essence, you get the best of both worlds – sturdy, time-tested construction methods combined with the latest innerspring technology and innovative product design.

Mattress Types

Serta vs. BeloitSerta produces three main types of mattresses:

  1. Innerspring
  2. Memory foam
  3. Memory foam hybrid

Innerspring mattresses feature a support core made of steel coil springs that is topped with an upholstery comfort layer.Memory foam mattresses use foam for the support core, rather than coil springs. Serta offers several different types of innerspring and memory foam mattresses. Serta also manufactures hybrid mattresses that combine the support of innerspring with the comfort of memory foam.

Beloit Mattress Company manufactures four different types of mattresses:

  1. Innerspring
  2. Latex foam
  3. Gel memory
  4. Hybrid

In addition to manufacturing innerspring mattresses and memory foam mattresses, much like those produced by Serta, Beloit Mattress also makes latex mattresses. Made by processing naturally existing rubber, latex mattresses offer a naturally supportive, breathable, and more eco-friendly core. Latex relieves pressure points much like memory foam, but air moves through latex better than through memory foam, making latex much cooler to sleep on.

Beloit Mattress Company also offers various types of hybrid mattresses, combining the best features of innerspring, foam, and latex mattresses. And because any mattress purchased from Beloit Mattress Company is made in the same building where you buy it, custom adjustments in materials and firmness are available.

Price Points

Since each mattress retailer who carries Serta mattresses is able to set its own markup, the price of a Serta mattress can vary from store to store. In general, you can expect the retail price of a name-brand mattress sold at a national mattress chain to be marked up 6 to 12 times the manufacturer’s price. That’s why so many mattress retailers are able to have numerous 50% off sales throughout the year and still stay in business. Since all Beloit Mattress Company sleep systems are sold direct to the public from our factory store in Beloit, Wisconsin, we are able to cut out the middleman and offer factory-direct pricing. That’s why you never see 50% off mattress sales at Beloit Mattress Company. We offer everyday low prices, helping our customers save money without sacrificing quality or comfort.
