What Is Meant By a “Hybrid Mattress”?
So, what is a hybrid mattress anyway?
Simply put, a hybrid mattress is a multi-layer bed that combines two or more support materials into a single mattress. The goal here is to combine all the benefits of multiple materials into one. This creates a more comfortable and supportive bed.
Generally, there are three different types of mattress materials.
- Innerspring – The most common mattress material type, innerspring support is economical and comes in many varieties. A well-made innerspring mattress can provide fantastic support and comfort. However, low-quality ones will likely come up short, both in comfort and back pain relief. They also allow more motion disturbance and can lead to pressure points.
- Foam – Foam mattresses (like memory foam) are typically made from polyurethane. It offers excellent support and has a distinctive feel as it conforms entirely to your body. Furthermore, foam mattresses tend not to transfer motion, making it a fantastic option for partners who tend to toss and turn. However, they tend to trap heat which can make some people uncomfortable. On the negative side; they may have off-gas, can pose risk for SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), and aren’t recommended for infants.
- Latex – Latex mattresses provide a good mix between the bounce of innerspring and the give of foam. Dunlop latex is essentially a single slab of the material (the more cost-effective option). Talalay latex, on the other hand, features multiple air columns throughout, making it more breathable and flexible. Latex may irritate people with latex sensitivity.
In most cases, the best will be hybrid mattresses made in the USA – thanks to higher manufacturing and safety standards than most internationally manufactured mattresses.

Inner Layers of a Hybrid Mattress
What Key Components Make Up a Hybrid Mattress?
When you look under the covers of a hybrid bed you can see why they are unique and a popular choice amongst consumers. More popular hybrids include these 3 layers:
- Comfort Layer – Comfort layers are always under the cover and flush against the bed. Some hybrids have a pillow top that is sewn on top of the comfort layer for further extra cushioning. Comfort layers have a big impact on the overall feel of the hybrid mattress. While innerspring mattresses commonly include comfort layers like cotton, polyester, wool, and even foam, hybrid comfort layers most commonly include memory foam, latex, or even poly-foam which provide great pressure relief.
- Transition Layer – Many hybrid beds include a “transition layer” – made from memory foam, latex foam, or even poly-foam. A transition layer adds both cushioning or bounce and even help better distribute body weight to prevent pressure build-up. Some transition layers can include cooling features.
- Support Layer – This layer typically includes pocketed coils and just under a thin foam base for the coils to rest on. Pocketed coils like our Combi-Zone innerspring system provide key body support zones and delivery support for all body types. Support layers can also include edge support like our Quantum Edge unit made up of our narrow-diameter coils with Caliber steel coils at the head and foot to provide enhanced edge support.
What Type of Comfort Levels Are Available
While the mattress core provides the bulk of your support, the comfort layer will ultimately determine how comfortably you sleep.
Granted, some mattresses, particularly hybrids contain one or more transition layers where the comfort layers sit on. Comfort layers range in comfort levels as follows:
- Firm Comfort – A firm, yet comfortable sleep surface with multiple layers of materials for support, durability, and comfort.
- Cushion Firm Comfort – A firm sleep surface with an additional layer of quilted materials for greater comfort and body conformance.
- Plush Comfort – A soft sleeping surface with superior body conformance and deep-down support
- Ultra Plush Comfort – A deeper, plusher sleep surface that’s supportive while offering a “down-like” comfort.
Consider trying our Mattress Match to find the hybrid best suited for your support and comfort needs.
While Mattress Match will help, you can figure out your level using these 4 factors:
1: Your Body Size.
Heavier bodies may need a firmer mattress for added support to maintain proper sleep posture, while lighter bodies may want some plushness to help fill in any gaps.
2. Cradling Sensation
If you love to feel fully cradled, try a plusher comfort level. If you prefer more mobility or sleep hot, start by sampling a firmer mattress.

3: Sleep Positions
Side Sleeper: Choose a comfort layer with some plushness (like cushion firmness) so you get adequate pressure relief in your shoulders and hips. Start with this level and add one level of firmness to support heavier body weight, or subtract one level for lighter body weight.
Combination Sleeper: Note the thickness for your “plushest” sleep position, and select a comfort layer
slightly firmer than this to accommodate other positions. Then, choose a support layer that allows you to sink in a little when needed.
Stomach Sleeper: Choose a thinner comfort layer that fully supports your lumbar so your back does not arch while sleeping.
Back Sleeper: Consider a thinner, firmer comfort layer to support your entire backside adequately.
4. Health Concerns
If you have health issues like chronic back or joint pain, asthma, or sleep apnea, for example, seek your doctor’s advice first for any recommendations about your mattress choice.
Are Hybrid Mattresses Better Than Memory Foam?
That all depends.
In theory, a hybrid mattress provides all the benefits of multiple support types while negating the benefits. It’s a “best of both worlds” situation.
When it comes to memory foam hybrid mattresses, in particular, the support structure is usually innerspring that’s topped with a layer of memory foam. The support system is typically made of pocket coil (or individually wrapped) springs. Since each spring compresses and extends on its own, you get a similar motion transfer dampening as if you had plain memory foam.
On top of that, a hybrid won’t have as dramatic of a “sinking” feeling that some people complain about with memory foam.
However, hybrids aren’t all about innerspring and memory foam. Some also take advantage of latex too.
Adding latex to a hybrid mattress provides extra support, a luxurious feel, and a more comfortable night’s sleep.
To get all these benefits, though, you need to find a quality hybrid mattress.
Why Getting the Right Hybrid Mattress Is Important for Great Sleep
Why spend the time, effort, and investment on a great night’s sleep with a hybrid mattress anyway?
As it turns out, getting quality sleep is vital for feeling, thinking, and performing at our best.
Just take a look at the statistics below to see why.
- In just the United States, insufficient sleep has an estimated economic impact of $411 billion each year (RAND).
- Drowsy driving was estimated to be responsible for 91,000 crashes in 2017 alone—resulting in 50,000 injuries and nearly 800 deaths. It’s also believed these numbers are underestimated, and up to 6,000 fatal crashes, each year may be caused by drowsy drivers (CDC).
- People that didn’t get enough sleep are 4X as likely to suffer from lack of concentration and have relationship problems. They’re 3X more likely to be depressed and 2.6X more likely to commit suicide (American Sleep Association).
- Getting less than 6 hours of sleep continuously makes you nearly 1.5X as likely (48%) to die of heart disease and 15% more likely to develop a stroke (American Sleep Association).
It’s worth noting, though, that it’s vital you find the right hybrid mattress for you. And while mattress shopping can be stressful for some, Beloit’s Mattress Match makes it simple to find your perfect mattress.

What Are the Pros & Cons of a Hybrid Mattress?
Sometimes it pays to see the upsides and downsides of choice laid out in front of you before you make your decision.
If you’re considering buying a hybrid mattress, take a look at the pros and cons below to see if a hybrid mattress is right for you.
Pros
There are plenty of upsides to choosing a hybrid mattress.
- Suitable for All Sleeper Types – As the name implies, a hybrid mattress offers multiple types of support. And in many cases, a quality hybrid will comfortably sleep back, side, or even stomach sleepers.
- Excellent for Partners – With the right hybrid mattress (usually with pocket coils), motion between partners is not transferred as freely as with other materials. This and a healthy amount of bounce make it an excellent option for people sleeping next to their partners, no matter how much they toss and turn in the night.
- Superior Pressure Point Relief – Coils offer a fair amount of support. But those who are particularly prone to back and joint pain may still wake up sore and achy on a typical innerspring. With the added layer of conforming foam and latex support from hybrid mattresses, you can take the pressure off your spine and joints to have a more relaxing and restful night’s sleep.
- Good Temperature Regulation – Finally, the best hybrid mattresses will be far superior at regulating your body temperature than memory foam options. You can keep excellent thanks to gel-infused foam and soft, breathable latex with the right hybrid.
Cons
That being said, there are a few downsides to a hybrid mattress.
- More Expensive Than Other Materials – The most notable downside of a hybrid mattress is, you guessed it, the price tag. Basic innerspring, foam, and latex mattresses are relatively simple to create. But combining them all takes quite a bit more engineering and technical know-how. As a result, a hybrid mattress may be outside some price range (though affordable options do exist).
- Quality Matters – Since this mattress type tends to be more luxurious than other options, there’s a vast difference between the best hybrid mattress and those that are low-quality. As a result, you may have to spend a little more time doing your research to find the best hybrid mattresses on the market.
- Can Be Bulky – Lastly, a hybrid mattress may be bulkier than mattresses made from other materials. Complex innerspring systems combined with dense memory foam (and sometimes layers of latex) can all add up to a heavier mattress. And that can make it a bit more challenging to move.
Who Makes the Best Hybrid Mattress?
Now that you know the general ups and downs of a hybrid mattress, it’s time to figure out who makes the best ones.
Of course, we’re a bit biased about our hybrid mattresses, but in general, you’ll want to look for companies that have the following qualities:
- American Made
- No Middleman
- Time-Tested Craftsmanship
- Superior Materials
- Over-the-Moon Customers
- An Ironclad Guarantee
American Made

Made In USA Mattresses – Beloit Wisconsin
An American-made hybrid mattress doesn’t just mean zero outsourcing to other countries and keeping jobs in the USA.
Beyond that, the United States also has much stricter manufacturing and safety regulations compared to other countries. For instance, mattresses must adhere to specific fire codes.
They also have strict guidelines for using harmful materials like fiberglass or products that give off dangerous fumes.
Buying hybrid mattresses made in the USA isn’t just about buying within America. It’s about buying safely.
And at The Beloit Mattress Company, we build our hybrid mattresses in the USA. Heck, we make them right in our own Wisconsin factory!
No Middleman
With big-name mattress stores, you aren’t buying straight from the manufacturer. Instead, your mattress goes through lots of different hands before it shows up at your door.
Here’s what the supply chain looks like for them:
- Brainstormed and designed in the corporation
- Built on the floors of a hired-out factory
- Transported using a 3rd party logistics company
- Processed and sold at a physical retailer
- Stored and then removed from an outsourced retailer
- Delivered to your door
And with each step, the new party will want a piece of the pie—leaving you to deal with a higher price tag.
But when you find a factory-direct mattress company (like Beloit), you get to skip all that unnecessary up-charging.
For you, that means higher quality without the higher price tag.
The no-middle-man approach provides you with the best quality – and value!
Time-Tested Craftsmanship
You should only work with a mattress company that has been in the business for a long time (think decades).
These companies often pride themselves on using only the best manufacturing techniques. Techniques like hand-tufting take longer to do but produce the best results possible.
We’ve been handcrafting our mattresses at The Beloit Mattress Company since 1929. We’re proud to say we still use time-tested techniques for crafting quality mattresses.

100% Talalay Latex
Superior Materials
A bed is only ever as good as the materials used to make it.
Even the most skilled hands can’t turn low-quality materials into a comfortable, supportive mattress.
That’s why you should only work with companies that use the highest quality materials. Materials like plush, clean cotton. Or all-natural and environmentally friendly latex. Or plastic-free and 100% biodegradable wool.
We at Beloit are proud to partner with some of the best material suppliers in the industry.
An Ironclad Guarantee
Words only go so far in the showroom. The true test of a mattress is whether you love it for weeks after you’ve brought it home.
That’s why you should only use companies that offer a sleep satisfaction guarantee.
It’s why we at Beloit stand by our mattresses with our 365 Night Comfort Assurance Policy Guarantee. If your new mattress isn’t providing the comfort and support you need, bring it back to the store. We’ll make customer adjustments right then and there.
Simple as that.
Over-the-Moon Customers
Finally, read the reviews.
Any mattress company worth its salt will proudly display its customer reviews for all the world to see.
And if you’re thinking of buying from a company that doesn’t have any reviews, think again.

Better
The name says it all. This mattress provides the exceptional support of other models but with an added touch of cloud-soft plushness to ease your stress away.
Like other hybrid mattresses from Beloit, the foundational support comes from the Comfort Core Spring System (1057 Bolsa), which features the popular Quantum Edge Steel Perimeter. The coils also reduce disturbance brought on by moving partners throughout the night.
Natural Talalay Latex helps provide breathable comfort and support, but the show’s real star is the Posturfill HD micro coil system. It provides a plush feel with excellent support that’s cooler than foam.
Best

The Hybrid Restore 90th Anniversary
Similar in build and design to the 90th Anniversary Rejuvenate model, the Hybrid Restore’s main difference is in the 1057 Bolsa Comfort Core Spring System.
These Bolsa coils are stress-relieved, giving them greater durability, a longer lifespan, and exceptional support. Added to that, the coils help reduce the transfer of motion across the mattress, preventing you from feeling your partner’s motion throughout the night.
For the best night’s sleep you’ve had in a long time, go with the Restore.
